I hadn’t yet met Briston before. It didn’t take much for a friendship to take hold shortly after meeting however. His gentle demeanor and whimsical personality made this shoot feel just as much about hanging out as it was about getting the job done.
I always listen to an artists music before I photograph them. It just doesn’t feel right to me to skip out on that. His EP “Indiana” was released this year so of course I gave it a spin. I ate it up. The production, the musicianship, witty writing, and thoughtful playing on it made it an easy EP to put on repeat.
It was a hot day in early summer, and we took a few photographs at the International Market near Belmont University. With the famed restaurant closing down, we felt it’d be nice to hang there and shoot.
I can’t recommend Briston Maroney’s music enough. And of course - getting to see images from our time together get printed for NATIVE Magazine made this shoot all the better.
